BLOG – Chris McShane, Scotland, bassoon

The past week and a half has been a whirlwind experience. We have accomplished so much in that time and learned a lot from each other. It has been so inspiring to meet all the musicians from India and Kenya and make some amazing music with them. It’s hard to believe how far we have come from the first days of rehearsals to the many concerts we have already done and still have to do.

Being Scottish, it was so nice to welcome these musicians to my home country and show them what us Scots are all about. We have had a great taste of the Glasgow food, culture and nightlife and everyone has fully immersed themselves into the whole experience. I am looking forward to showing everyone the beautiful scenery Scotland has to offer on our trips to Loch Lomond and Edinburgh.

At each concert we have had amazing audiences that have been so receptive and given some great feedback. The music that we have been playing never becomes boring as it’s such an eclectic mix of all three cultures, a particular favourite of mine being one of our Kenyan pieces ‘Pole Musa’ in which we all get to dance and let our hair down. It also seems that these pieces have the power to control the weather as in our recent Glasgow Green concert the rain was on until we played this piece and the sun came blaring out for it.

Overall the Scokendia project has been a truly amazing experience and I am so glad to be a part of it. Each of the musicians has something special to give to the ensemble. I look forward to the last few days of making music, learning and socialising with our new friends from India and Kenya. All of whom will most definitely be friends for life.
